Kurukshetra, Haryana:
Two students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) drowned in the Bhakra canal in this Haryana city. The police gave this information on Wednesday.
Both were third year students of civil engineering.
SHO of Adarsh police station Devinder Kumar said on Tuesday evening that six students of NIT Kurukshetra had gone to take a picnic and bathe in Narwana branch of Bhakra Canal in Jyotisar.
Rahul, a resident of Prayagraj in UP, slipped in the canal and was swept away by the strong current of water. Another student, Anubhav, who hails from Rajasthan, jumped into the canal to save his friend, but he too got washed away, he said.
According to the police, after receiving information about the incident, a rescue operation was started by the administration. On Wednesday morning, divers recovered the bodies of both the students from the downstream of the canal.
The SHO said that after the family members of the victims reached here, the bodies were sent for postmortem. NIT Public Relations Officer Prof. Vikas Mittal told that some students had gone to the canal in the evening, during which the incident happened.
