Turkey Greece War: Could there be a war between Greece and Turkey? What is the reason for the enmity between the two countries?

Athens: Tensions between Greece and Turkey are increasing continuously. Greek officials say elections are to be held in both countries next June. In such a situation, even a small encounter with Turkey in the Aegean Sea or the Eastern Mediterranean can start a major war. Greece suspects that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan may try to threaten the country’s security in order to increase his popularity ahead of the election. Erdogan, who has been in Turkey for 20 years, threatened in August that he could order his army to take over the Greek islands at any time. He had said that we may come suddenly one night. If the Greeks do something, they will have to pay a heavy price. Even before this, tensions between Greece and Turkey reached a peak in 2020 over a survey ship. Tension in the Mediterranean was so high that France had to threaten to deploy its navy.

Former NSA of Greece said – now war is possible
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Retired Admiral Alexandros Diakopoulos of Greece said that by 2019, 2020, 2021 I had said that there is no possibility of war. But, I can’t say that now. Turkish rhetoric is now moving towards attack. Admiral Alexandros Diakopoulos is the former National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Turkey’s top diplomats in Athens also agree that tensions with Greece are at their peak, but they believe that tensions can be handled well. Turkish Ambassador Burak Ozuggargin said that as the embassy, we have had a proper dialogue with our Greek allies. We are all trying to avoid accidents. Things are not as bad as in the summer of 2020 but we need to be very cautious as things can get worse very soon.

Turkey is trying to complicate Greece on many fronts
Angelos Sirigos, professor of international law at Pantheon University and deputy minister for education and religious affairs, also agrees with the war fears. He said Greece needed to make the most serious defense preparations. He said that I think Turkey will try to create many parallel crises. He will try to escalate the refugee crisis or prepare to heat the atmosphere by sending an oil and gas survey ship into the seas off Greece. Two years ago, tensions between these two countries included in NATO reached a peak level. Turkey then sent a survey ship to search for oil and gas under water. At the same time, Greece claimed that the area where the ship was discovered came under its jurisdiction under international law. After this the navies of Greece and Turkey faced each other in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey wants to capture Greece’s islands
Turkey claims that Greece has no rights over the islands held by its country. It is not ready to stop the search activities in these areas. Turkey says it wants to conduct seismic imaging surveys in addition to oil and gas exploration in the seabed. Seeing these threats from Greece, Diakopoulos said that Turkey’s strategy in 2019-21 was to provoke us to use force first. Now Turkey knows that this will not happen… so they are thinking of launching the first attack. Turkey’s move is to annex our islands by declaring Greece an aggressor. In such a situation, they can call themselves victims in the international world.

Turkey and Greece have different claims
The main reason for hostility between Turkey and Greece is some islands in the eastern Mediterranean. These islands are occupied by Greece, but they are geographically close to Turkey. Not only this, the culture, dress, food and language of the people living on these islands are similar to those of Turkey. In such a situation, Turkey claims these islands, although Greece has been denying these claims from the beginning. Turkish diplomats say that the dispute with Greece is not only over the islands, but also issues such as the width of the territorial waters, the delimitation of the islands, the demilitarization of the islands or the length of the airspace. Erdogan’s officials claim that he ceded these islands to Greece under the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty. It claimed that Greece would not militarize these islands, but that promise has been broken.
