Prime Minister’s race will start again in Britain, Priti Patel supports Boris Johnson, 100 MPs in favor of Rishi

London: Priti Patel, who served as Home Minister in the cabinet of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, has supported the reappearance of her former boss, replacing Liz Truss. Patel, an Indian-origin MP, had last observed silence, not expressing her choice amid the ongoing rivalry between Conservative Party leader Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak for the post of prime minister. But Patel has now said that in the 2019 general election, Conservative Party leader Johnson got the mandate.

The fifty-year-old politician tweeted that the former PM has proved himself by taking the right big decisions. Patel tweeted, “Boris has the mandate to fulfill our election agenda. I support Johnson in his fight for leadership.” Johnson, 58, has returned from a vacation in the Caribbean and is expected to be in the race to become prime minister once again.

Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, who is the front-runner to replace Liz Truss, who resigned as prime minister in just 44 days due to a policy reversal and a collapse in the financial markets, may face a challenge from Johnson. Johnson himself resigned as prime minister six weeks ago after several scandals and the resignation of a large number of his ministers, but his popularity in the Conservative Party remains intact.

100 supporters of Rishi Sunak
At least three cabinet ministers have openly said they would support Johnson as the new prime minister, including Commerce Minister Jacob Reismog, Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and another minister, Simon Clark. Johnson’s supporters have reached 46, but Sunak’s supporters number 100. If only one candidate comes forward, Britain will have a new prime minister by next week.

Voting will be done online
But if there is a contest between the two candidates, by Friday 170,000 Tory members will vote online. So far, it looks like a triangular contest, as third-place House of Commons leader Penny Mordont has also kicked off her campaign. Penney has launched a video campaign to attract as many lawmakers as possible, and his number of supporters has grown to 21.
