Pakistan Army Chief News: No extension needed, I will retire in five weeks… announced Pak Army Chief General Bajwa

Islamabad: Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa said on Friday that he is retiring in the next five weeks. He said that he would not seek extension of service. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will choose the new army chief after General Bajwa’s term ends on November 29. According to ‘Geo TV’, the government has announced that the army chief’s successor will be appointed in due course and in accordance with the constitution. Gen Bajwa said on Friday that he would not seek extension and would retire after five weeks, the channel reported, citing unnamed sources.

Bajwa said – Army will not have any role in politics
Bajwa, who held the top post of Pakistan Army for six years, also said that the army will not play any role in politics. He was initially appointed in 2016, but after a three-year term in 2019, the then government of Imran Khan extended his service for another three years. In September, former prime minister Imran Khan had called for early elections, saying that General Bajwa should be given another extension till the new government is elected. There was speculation that he might get another term after meeting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif in London earlier this month. But that’s not likely now.

Prime Minister’s prerogative to appoint new Army Chief
The appointment of an army chief is entirely the prime minister’s prerogative and this is perhaps the only time when his decision is accepted by the mighty army without any ifs. The upcoming appointment is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. When Khan was in power, the opposition accused him of trying to bring in a person of his choice to the post of army chief, who could support his alleged agenda of harassing opposition leaders. After losing power in April this year, the equations have changed and Khan is now saying that the coalition government wants to appoint an army chief of its choice to save looted assets and steal the mandate of the general elections.
