Liz Truss: Britain’s third female prime minister, had to resign ahead of trade deal with India

London: Britain’s third female prime minister, Liz Truss, resigned on Thursday after her brief stint at 10 Downing Street in London failed to get the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) done. Truss, who till Wednesday presented herself in Parliament as a fighter and not one to give up responsibility, resigned just six weeks after becoming prime minister. The former foreign minister’s stay as prime minister was made impossible after Truss changed policy decisions, cabinet turmoil and open rebellion against his ability to lead an internally deadlocked Conservative Party. Truss was born in Oxford and his father was a mathematics professor while mother was a nurse and teacher. He was brought up in different areas of Britain. Truss’s husband is accountant Hugh O’Leary and they have two daughters.

Truss favors strong ties with India
Truss, who advocated strong bilateral ties with India during her tenure as Britain’s foreign and trade minister, defeated former Indian-origin finance minister Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership election last month at 10 Downing Street (British Prime Minister’s Office). official residence). She has become the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history by resigning after 45 days in office. Earlier in 1827, George Conning held this position for 119 days till his death.

Received the distinction of becoming Britain’s third female prime minister
Truss, 47, a senior minister in the Johnson cabinet, faced a more difficult period than her predecessors, female prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May, where the cost of living continues to rise in the country. He also faced factionalism in his own party as he won the election for leadership of the Conservative Party with 57 percent of the vote against 43 percent, which is not considered a huge margin.

Leaders pro-negotiating FTA with India
On the India front, Truss, a former international trade minister in the Johnson-led government, signed the India-UK Advanced Trade Partnership (ETP) in May last year. She was looking forward to continuing talks on the FTA, keeping in mind the deadline for the end of this year as a major post-Brexit achievement for Britain. He described India as a “big and important opportunity” and believes that India and the UK “are in a better place with the dynamics that have been created in trade.” Soon after signing the ETP, Truss said, “We are looking at a comprehensive trade agreement that covers everything from financial services to legal services, digital and data, commodities to agriculture.” We believe that there is a strong possibility of early signing of this agreement, which will reduce taxes on both sides, both sides will see the supply of their goods between each other.

Emphasis was given on enhancing the defense and security of Indo-Pacific
Truss had reiterated at the party’s Conservative Friends of India (CFIN) program that he was very committed to strengthening bilateral ties. She had committed that she wanted to do an India-UK FTA, the deadline set by her predecessor. He said that probably this agreement will be done by Diwali, but surely this agreement will be implemented by the end of this year. Truss has been consistently pushing for increased defense and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region to achieve the goal of an “independent network” and to counter China and Russia’s aggression. He promised that the UK visa administration would continue to attract “the best talent” from India.
