Israel’s top court lifts election ban from Arab party

Israel’s top court has lifted a ban barring the Arab Party of Ballad from participating in the country’s parliamentary elections to be held on November 1. A nine-judge Supreme Court panel unanimously decided to set aside the decision of the Central Election Committee, which disqualified Balad from participating in the election, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement issued by the court. .

On 29 September, the Central Election Committee, the body that authorizes parties and candidates before votes and is made up of lawmakers from several political parties, voted 9 to 5 to disqualify the Arab Party.

Hassan Jabreen, general director of Adala, an Israeli Arab rights group that petitioned the Supreme Court on Balad’s behalf, said in a statement that the Central Elections Committee had reviewed other Arab lists and candidates before each election round over the past few years. Tried to ban.

The committee’s actions are aimed at inciting Arab political representatives and pushing them beyond the limits of legitimate political rhetoric, he said.

Israel’s Arab citizens, who make up about 20 percent of the country’s population, are Palestinians, who remained in the region after Israel’s war of independence in 1948.

The judges also overturned another election committee decision, which said former legislator Amichai Chikli could contest the upcoming elections with former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party.

Chikli was ousted from Yamina, a pro-party headed by former prime minister Naftali Bennett, after refusing to vote for the coalition in April. The coalition collapsed nearly two months later, leading to an unprecedented fifth election in less than four years.
