The ED has arrested suspected bookie Anil Jaisinghani in connection with the money laundering probe related to the Indian Premier League (IPL). Officials gave this information on Saturday.
Mumbai Police recently arrested Jaisinghani and his daughter Aniksha on charges of conspiring to bribe and blackmail Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. It is alleged that Amrita refused to save Aniksha’s father Anil Jaisinghani in several cases registered against him, and then tried to extort money from him.
The ED’s Ahmedabad office on Friday moved a Mumbai court with a production warrant and took Jaisinghani into custody. The probe agency sought his custody under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED was acting on a non-bailable warrant issued against Jaisinghani by an Ahmedabad court in the past. The warrant was issued in 2015 in connection with an investigation into alleged betting in IPL matches. The federal agency is probing the matter. After taking Jaisinghani into custody on Friday, the agency is understood to be recording his statement in the case.
Jaisinghani was recently detained by the Madhya Pradesh Police in a case of alleged illegal trade of liquor. The father-daughter duo is alleged to have hatched a conspiracy whereby Aniksha struck up a friendly relationship with Amruta Fadnavis and then requested her to ‘save her father from several criminal cases pending against him’ as Amruta Fadnavis’ husband was a public servant.
