India-New Zealand Relation: Jaishankar is on a week-long tour of New Zealand and Australia. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday held talks with his New Zealand counterpart Nanaya Mahuta and discussed a wide range of issues including visa issues faced by Indian students, the Ukraine conflict and security in the Indo-Pacific region, among other bilateral issues. Jaishankar, who is visiting the country, said in a joint press conference that some current, some pressing issues like the security situation in the Indo-Pacific, the outcome of the Ukraine conflict were discussed and naturally we spent some time on major global issues.

India is helping many other countries

The importance of doing them. With contingencies like pandemics, we know that there will certainly be a recurrence at some point and of course, other common concerns, maritime security, for example.

A great responsibility between the two countries
The External Affairs Minister said that I think we recognize today that countries like India and New Zealand have a special responsibility in creating a post-colonial system that is more equitable and that provides prosperity and stability to large parts of the world. with which we are historically associated. However, the bulk of the dialogue went to strengthen bilateral ties and the sum and essence of it was really an understanding that the two should play to each other’s strengths, particularly in business, education, technology, the digital world, Agribusiness, talent and most people connect people because it is at the heart of both societies.

raised voice for students
On the same visa issue, he said that we talked a little bit about the need for better air connectivity. I also raised with the Minister the concerns that some of our students have faced, students who had to leave New Zealand during the COVID period and who did not get the opportunity to renew their visas. I urged a fairer and more sympathetic treatment for them, also students who are waiting to come to New Zealand for their studies and whether the visa process can be expedited for them.

we discussed the issue openly
He further said that we also mentioned the demand for skills in every society. New Zealand probably has demands that can be met from India and has an understanding of the dynamics with many countries so it is likely that they can serve as a guide for progress. He said that there was also a very open discussion on how India and New Zealand together will shape the larger region, the Indo-Pacific.
