The ruckus started in the lower house of Parliament at around 1:06 pm.

Opposition leaders in Lok Sabha today protested at the Well of the House, claiming that BJP member Chandra Prakash Joshi glorified the abolition of ‘Sati’ practice. Amidst loud protests, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House briefly to check records and defuse the situation. Shri Joshi is the Member of Parliament from Chittorgarh, Rajasthan.
Mr Joshi had triggered the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address when he made a reference to Queen Padmavati of Mewar, who is believed to have immolated herself to protect her honor from the invader Alauddin Khilji.
Opposition members Supriya Sule from the NCP, Kanimozhi, Dayanidhi Maran from the DMK, and A Raja, K Muraleedharan, and Imtiaz Jaleel (AIMIM) from the Congress claimed that Mr. Joshi had glorified the practice of ‘Sati’.
CP Joshi insisted that he had made no mention of Sati Pratha, but mentioned that Padmavati had performed ‘Sati Pratha’.Jauhar‘ (self-immolation) to protect his honour.
“I stand by my words,” he said amid sloganeering by opposition members at the Well of the House.
The uproar in the lower house of Parliament began around 1:06 pm, when opposition MPs rushed to the ruling side and claimed Mr Joshi had made objectionable remarks. The proceedings of the House were adjourned till 1:30 pm.
