Australia-Israel: Australia has refused to recognize Jerusalem as the capital in a blow to Israel. The Australian government has reversed the decision of the old government. The Australian government has said that we do not accept Israel’s decisions to unilaterally change the situation in West Jerusalem. Under the leadership of Scott Morris, Australia recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2018. At the same time, the present government has reversed this decision.
The Australian government says that the issue should be resolved through peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has said that Australia is committed to a two-state solution, in which Israel and the future Palestinian state remain within internationally recognized borders. Peace and security are paramount for us.
‘Will consider the decision of the old government’
Australian Foreign Minister Wong has denied reversing the decision made by the previous government. A spokesman for Wong told Australia’s ABC News that the government wanted to consider the final status of Jerusalem as a matter to be resolved as part of any peace talks. Peace and security are essential for us. We will not support an approach that undermines the possibility of peace. The previous government had decided to recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, this is correct, but we are not going to change its capital, but will consider it.
Australia recognized the capital in the year 2018
The government of then Prime Minister Scott Morrison considered Jerusalem as the Israeli capital after the decision of then US President Donald Trump, in which Donald Trump’s government recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, but now Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has said that we believe in the Israeli-Palestinian two-nation theory. We will not support any unilateral change. Therefore, the decision of the previous government is being officially reversed.
