The situation is likely to worsen
A senior scientist says that we call this phenomenon as Side and Subsidence. This means that the ground beneath the road is not stable which causes the road to crack. The situation we have seen in Joshimath so far, the same pattern is being seen here. But the Meteorological Department has predicted that there will be rain and heavy snowfall in the coming days. If this prediction comes true, the situation may worsen.
People were worried
Bikram Singh, director of the Meteorological Department, said that Chamoli, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh, as well as higher elevations in Dehradun, may see heavy snowfall here. The atmosphere is likely to change here after Tuesday night. It may be mentioned that due to these cracks on the highway, the state administration and the people living in and around Joshimath are worried because this highway is the only way to go to other places in Chamoli district.
Worrying for the army too
It is worth mentioning that food and other items are also supplied through this route. D.S. who lives in Manohar Bagh of Joshimath. According to Rawat, National Highway 58 is the only lifeline from Chamoli to Mana. It is the only way to enter and exit Mana, Badrinath, Hemkund, Valley of Flowers, Pakhi, Helang, Pandukeshwar and Joshimath. The road is cracked at various places. This highway work should be done on a priority basis as it is also necessary for army personnel stationed in other border villages including Joshimath.
25 lakh vehicles passed
Another resident, Badri Prasad Nainwal, said that about 25 lakh vehicles had passed on the National Highway in the past one year. This figure is huge compared to the capacity of hill roads. And now when the Badrinath Yatra starts, once again a large number of vehicles will come. Convenor of Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti Atul Sati says that both the roads leading from Joshimath to Badrinath are cracked. This is also worrying for the army.
