Arvind Kejriwal tweeted and said, ‘First said that 2000 note will stop corruption. Now they are saying that by stopping the 2000 note, corruption will end. That is why we are saying that the PM should be educated. Anyone can say anything to an illiterate PM. They do not understand anything. The people have to suffer.’
Congress leaders also criticized the decision
Congress has also reacted to RBI’s decision to withdraw Rs 2000 notes. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted that the so called Swayamsevi Vishwaguru, first acts, then thinks. The Rs 2000 note introduced with so much fanfare after the Taghalkhi Farman of 8 November 2016 is now being withdrawn. So Alka Lamba said that if there is an investigation, demonetisation will prove to be the biggest scam of the century. In the name of attack on black money, Prime Minister Modi stopped the 1000 rupees note and introduced 2000 rupees notes only to make the work of his runaway capitalist friends easier. Former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah said that another demonetization of PM Modi. It is sad that the BJP government is not clear about its policies.
Important aspects of RBI’s decision
– The two thousand rupee note will remain valid until September 30.
– People can either deposit the Rs 2,000 note in their bank account or instead go to the bank and RBI’s 19 regional offices to get notes of other denominations.
– Two thousand notes can be deposited in the bank account without any hindrance. However, it is dependent on the customer meeting KYC criteria.
– People can exchange Rs 2,000 notes up to Rs 20,000 in one day from May 23.
– A bank account holder can exchange Rs 2,000 notes up to the value of Rs 4,000 through bank representatives.
– In November 2016, two thousand rupee notes were issued after the old 500 and 1000 rupee notes were released into circulation.
– The 2000 rupee note will remain valid until November 30.
– RBI has stopped printing Rs 2000 notes from the financial year 2018-19.
– About 89 percent of the two thousand rupee notes were issued before March 2017.
– The share of Rs 2,000 notes was 37.3 per cent of the total notes in circulation in March 2018, which declined to 10.8 per cent on March 31, 2023.
– In terms of value, Rs 2,000 notes worth a total of Rs 6.73 lakh crore in March 2018, stood at Rs 3.62 lakh crore on March 31, 2023.
